Boulder Dash is a legendary arcade puzzle game originally created by Peter Liepa and Chris Gray, published by First Star Software in 1984. The player controls Rockford — a daring miner — who must collect a certain number of diamonds within a time limit while avoiding falling boulders, slime, and enemy creatures. In 1983, Peter Liepa wrote a prototype for the Atari 800 under the name "Rockford". Together with programmer Chris Gray they refined the gameplay and presented it to First Star Software. The game was released in 1984 for Atari 8-bit family, Commodore 64, and quickly became a smash hit. It combined arcade action with puzzle elements — a fresh concept at the time.

Boulder Dash was among the first games to include a built-in level editor, encouraging players to design their own caves. It sold millions of copies across home computers, NES, Game Boy, and modern platforms.
